President advises Jinja Municipality East to elect wisely

Tuesday 7th February 2012

President Yoweri Museveni, the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party, strongly advised the electorate of Jinja Municipality to send to Parliament a person who will not antagonize government development programmes.

The President was speaking at a rally organized at Lakeside Primary School in Jinja Municipality East constituency by the NRM flag bearer Mr. Igeme Nathan Nabeta, for the forthcoming by-election slated for Thursday 9th February 2012.

Mr. Igeme’s previous election to Parliament was nullified after his opponent filed a case in court due to alleged lack of academic qualifications but was later cleared by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).

President Museveni, who was drumming up support for Mr. Nabeta, warned the people of the area not to take politics as a joke otherwise they will end up in a very bad situation. He reminded the huge gathering of the mistakes made in the 1962 elections when the people of Uganda, especially those in Buganda, were misled by Mengo to elect the late Obote and ignored Benedikto Kiwanuka who stood by the truth. He added that within 4 years, tears and blood were flowing, institutions overthrown and what was a joke turned out to be misery.

He said that NRM stemmed the situation in 1986 and again cautioned the people of Busoga against making the same mistakes that they also somehow had made by sending opposition MPs to Parliament. He told them that leaders are like drivers who can drive well once they are good or can cause accidents if they are bad drivers.

The NRM National Chairman expressed gratitude to learn that all the wrangling parties in Jinja Municipality had reconciled and warned them not to mix personal differences with the Party’s direction because, he added, NRM Party is the most important thing.

He assured the people of Busoga Sub-Region that the problem of electricity and that of sugar will be solved. He also allayed fears by the sitting market vendors of the Central Market, under construction in Jinja Municipality that they will not be barred from re-occupying their businesses. He added that he has ordered for the opening of a second access road to the temporary market.

He also said the Municipal Council land that is being occupied by make-shift dwellers, will be developed and the land around Kirinya prisons, will be allocated to investors, led by Mr. Igeme Nathan Nabeta, to build an ICT factory for computers.

The President, therefore, called on the electorate of Jinja Municipality East to elect Igeme Nathan Nabeta, the NRM Party flag bearer, who is very enterprising.

Earlier on arrival, President Museveni unveiled a plaque for the construction of an ultra-modern Central Market in Jinja Municipality.
