President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Martin Aliker as the country representative for the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust Fund in Uganda. Dr. Aliker effectively becomes the Chairperson of the Trust Fund, Uganda Chapter.
The Commonwealth Heads of Governments meeting in 2011 established the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust to raise funds throughout the Commonwealth and work with strategic partners to identify charitable projects that will enrich the lives and opportunities of all its citizens – across generations and geographical boundaries in order to provide a lasting legacy for Her Majesty the Queen.
In doing so the Trust will actively seek to invest in a limited number of innovative, compelling initiatives that will make tangible differences to people’s lives in Commonwealth countries.
As chairperson Uganda Chapter, Dr. Aliker is tasked with promoting awareness of the trust, encouraging and supporting fund raising and providing information for use by the Trust on on-going activities in the country.
Among other things, the Trust Fund raising which is limited to the jubilee year alone (February 2012-February 2013) will see the funds raised, disbursed during the next four years for investments in the Commonwealth. The fund will connect generations, work across geographic boundaries and deliver initiatives with a particular focus on the poorest and most disadvantaged communities.
Uganda will host a number of activities to commemorate the Queen`s Jubilee year and also raise funds for the Trust. All Ugandans of good will, companies (local and foreign), institutions, as well as Diplomatic missions are hereby invited to participate in this unique event.
Queen Elizabeth 11 was in Uganda for the CHOGM meeting in 2007. She first came to in 1954 when she inaugurated the Owen Falls Dam, Uganda's first hydro-electric power station. Two years later as part of initiatives to commemorate her visit, Uganda’s most beautiful National Park – The Queen Elizabeth 11 National Park was named after her.
