President flags off Uganda contingent to London Olympics

Friday 20th July 2012

President Yoweri Museveni has flagged off the Ugandan contingent to the 2012 London Olympic Games slated to kick off in the British capital in one week’s time.

During the flagging off ceremony this evening at State House, Entebbe, the President strongly advised the Uganda contingent not to panic but be confident as they compete with the rest of athletes in the London Olympic events.

Uganda is fielding a contingent of 18 athletes to compete in swimming, para-olympics, weight lifting, badminton and athletics. The ceremony was witnessed by State Minister for Sports, Mr. Charles Bakabulindi and the Acting President of Uganda Olympic Committee, Mr. William Blick, among others.

“Cultivate discipline especially with regard to your individual lives and desist from non-sporting acts to ensure that your potential and ability to score and register success, not only in the London Olympic Games but also in the future, is high”, the President advised.

Mr. Museveni pledged more commitment and support to sports activities in Uganda.

The President said that because Uganda was not settled in the past, support for sports activities had not been enough. He, however, assured the country and the sports fraternity that given the current trend of stability and development in the country, the sports sphere is slowly but steadily stabilizing as evidenced by the fact that Uganda is able to participate in the World Olympic Games.
