President Museveni commends steel manufacture President Yoweri Museveni has commended the Jinja-based Alam Group of Companies for the efforts to process iron ore into steel as a finished product.
He paid tribute to the Company during a meeting that he held yesterday with delegation from the Company that was led by the Mr. Abid Alam, the Chief Executive Officer, who paid him a visit to him at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhuura District.
Mr. Alam showed the President samples of sponge iron that has been produced from the iron ore that was extracted from the Muko deposits in Kabale District.
He revealed that plans were underway to expand steel production capacity at the Jinja based Steel Rolling Mills that is owned by the Company. He added that using modern technology, uniform quality of the final product of steel would be achieved.
Steel Rolling Mills is one of the leading producers of steel products in Uganda. The Company specializes in the manufacture of various high tensile profiles and sections with the biggest and most modern furnaces in East Africa producing ingots.
Since the Company’s installation, a level of 24,000 metric tons of high quality steel rolls per year has been achieved leading to the company’s ability to save Uganda foreign exchange of about US$18 million per annum in imports. It employs over 1,200 Ugandans and offers job trainer opportunities.
