President urges Ugandans to have industrial base to develop

President Yoweri Museveni has urged Ugandans to work for the establishment of industrial base for better economic development.

“The issue is we must have industrial base for our people”, he said.

The President was this morning meeting a delegation from the Acholi Sub-Region’s Amuru district who called on him at State House, Nakasero. The meeting was attended by State Minister for Housing, Mr. Sam Engola and that for Water, Mrs. Atuku Bigombe Betty.

Mr. Museveni stressed that the most important issue the people of Uganda should appreciate revolves on how best they can plan for the future of their children adding that the establishment of industries is paramount.

“We cannot plan for the future of our children when people are involved in activities such as hunting animals in so-called cultural lands they own. However, the cultural land system did not help the people of Uganda to develop ever since the colonial time because land was only dedicated to homestead activities such as farming, grazing, and hunting among other activities which did not bring in enough wealth returns”, he noted.

The President called on the people Uganda to take advantage of the existing markets in the region such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and establish factories to churn out more merchandise to meet the market demands.

Mr. Museveni called for team work among all district leaders in Uganda in order to promote and keep peace amongst themselves and with the people they lead because development and transformation depends on tranquility. He appealed to leaders at all levels to be very conscious about their utterances that could easily incite wananchi into acts that do not promote the public good.

The Amuru district delegation thanked President Museveni for his initiative to promote and cause development in Amuru district. They assured him that the people of Amuru district are willing to support the government development programmes in their area.
