Roofing Rolling Mills to Employ 1500 people

Wednesday 2nd October 2013

1500 jobs! President Yoweri Museveni, an unswerving empiricist in the region, yesterday launched the third phase of Roofing Rolling mills at Kampala Industrial and Business Park, Namanve. He later addressed a news conference at State HouseNakasero following a recent working visit to the US and Holland. The President responded to a wide range of questions.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the 3rd phase of the multi-billion state of the art plant in Namanve, he urged steel millers to form a consortium and partner with internal and external investors to exploit the iron ore reserves in the country and facilitate the building of an integrated steel industry. The President has explained several times that industrialization would create employment for Ugandans.

The US $125 million investment on 39 acres of land is the biggest plant in the region. The plant has an annual capacity of 150,000 tons and will employ 1500 people. The total annual investment of Roofing group is estimated at US $ 400 million that would ensure a total of 3,000 jobs to Ugandans.

"I congratulate Mr. Lalani and his group for being frugal, constructing the factory, and for contributing to Uganda's economy. I also salute the Government of Japan for her support to Uganda in various sectors. Mr. Lalani has put in place 3 phases. The only step left is linking steel industry with iron ore reserves in Uganda. I would, therefore, encourage you to form a consortium and work with colleagues from Uganda and abroad to bridge the gap," the President said.

The Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Amelia Kyambadde, disclosed that her ministry was in the process of formulating a national iron and steel policy to boost the sector. She informed manufacturers that Government was enacting a law that would protect their industries.
