Saturday 12th July 2014

President Yoweri Museveni has this morning flagged of Team Uganda set to participate in the Commonwealth games in Scotland at State House Entebbe.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Museveni cautioned sportsmen against alcohol and sex.

"Alcohol and sex don't mix with sports," he observed.

The President urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to consider support to sportsmen as important.

"These people in the Ministry should be serious. How can you not raise the money? Sports is not only for entertainment but it is good for fitness, aids character formation and is very good publicity for the country," he emphasized.

At the sidelines of the ceremony, President Museveni met Silver Medallist, Ivan Byekwaso, and congratulated the body builder upon his recent triumph. Ivan presented his medal to the President.

The President then promised the body builder Shs 2m per month and facilitation to prepare for the 17th Natural Body Building Olympiad in the US.

The Sports Minister, Charles Bakkabulindi, informed the President that the number of athletes leaving for Commonwealth Games is 60 and 50 sports officials.

The athletes were excited by President Museveni's memory of Ugandan sportsmen over the years including those in the 70s.

"Where is Grace Sseruwagi? I understand his languishing in Mityana. Please look for him and bring him to State House," the President tasked the Minister.

He pledged Government's continued support to sports.
