President Yoweri Museveni, who concluded a 4-day official to the United Arab Emirates earlier today, is now in Nairobi, Kenya for a Summit of Heads of State of East Africa Region on the Northern Corridor Integration projects. The one day Summit takes place in the Kenyan capital tomorrow 11th December 2014.
The Northern corridor that centres on transport issues is intended to link the land locked countries of Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi to Kenya’s Indian Ocean Port of Mombasa. The corridor arrangements also serve the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and northern Tanzania.
The Northern Corridor is the busiest and most important transport route in East and Central Africa, providing a gateway through Kenya to the landlocked economies of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern DR Congo. It also serves Southern Sudan since it broke away from Khartoum. The main Northern Corridor transport network is connected to the Port of Mombasa and includes a road network; railways; rail-lake transport; inland water routes; container terminals commonly regarded locally as ICDs (Inland Container Depots); Tororo Inland Port plus an oil pipeline.
The Northern Corridor Integration Projects is an initiative aimed at fast tracking regional development through regional infrastructure, trade and political and economic integration. The inaugural Summit of Northern Corridor nations was held in Entebbe in June 2013, bringing together Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Since the first Summit held in Entebbe in June 2013, a lot has been done in terms of infrastructure, ICT, trade, political and economic integration to list the few.
President Museveni was received on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport this evening by Senator Charles Keter and the Commander of Kenya Air Force, Gen. Thuita.
Others at the airport to receive the President included State Minister for International Affairs, Mr. Okello Oryem and Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Ms. Angelina Wapakhabulo.
