President Yoweri Museveni has urged the youth in Uganda to desist from indulging in bad habits such as smoking, drinking of alcohol and prostitution among others. He said that the youth should protect themselves in order to grow up as good children.
“Do not love bad habits. Do not smoke, do not drink alcohol and do not love ‘umalaya’. Grow up to be good children,” the President said.
The President emphasized the crucial role of the environment in the survival of the human race. He, therefore, thanked the organizers of the function for their concern and love of the environment through protecting and planting trees.
Mr. Museveni was today addressing the youth at the Green Christmas Party celebrations held at the Independence National Ceremonial Grounds at Kololo in Kampala district.
The Green Christmas Party is an annual event organized by the Uganda Little Hands for Green in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Tree Talk to use the Children as custodians of environmental conservation. The team gives out fruit trees to schools to be planted. During the celebrations, parents come along with their children.
For the past consecutive 3 years since the inception of the Uganda Little Hands for Green, over 100,000 trees have been planted in some parts of Uganda through the schools. Whenever children congregate to celebrate together the Green Christmas Party, they receive some seedlings to be planted their communities of aboard and commit themselves to look after the trees that they have planted. 5,000 seedlings were distributed to the children to be planted at today’s occasion.
President Museveni also called on the youth to love themselves and listen to their parents. He told them to love God and concentrate on their studies saying “love God and concentrate on studies in order to succeed. Love yourselves and make sure you listen to your parents,” he counseled. He wished the youth well as they marked the Green Christmas celebrations.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Little Hands for Green, Mr. Joseph Masembe, reported that the children are taught how to love their environment and their country Uganda adding that they plant trees throughout the year and later come together to celebrate the event.
He thanked the President for attending the celebrations for the last 3 years.
